Betrayal

For devotees of the English language: Morigerous is an adjective. It means obsequiously obedient.

“The country is governed for the richest, for the corporation, the bankers, the land speculators, and for the exploiters of labor. The majority of mankind are working people. So long as their fair demands — the ownership; and control of their livelihoods — are set a naught, we can have neither men’s rights or women’s rights. The majority of mankind is ground down by industrial oppression in order that the small remnant may live in ease.” Helen Keller.

Grover Glen Norquist is the head of Americans for Tax Reform since 1986. He had the morigerous Republican members of Congress sign the “Taxpayer Protection Pledge.” It promised their constituents to never raise taxes so it would ease their elections and reelections — selfish and uncaring at the expense of the American people. This folly has now come back to haunt the signers and Norquist in 2012.

Erskine Boles and Alan Simpson co-chaired the commission and issued The National Commission On Fiscal Responsibility and Reform report in December 2010 and it was signed by President Obama. If the Congress were to enact the recommendations in the sixty-seven page report, Helen Keller would have been pleased and so would Americans, because it will conquer our debt and allow for growth. As a part of the overall plan, tax increases will be essential in order to save this nation from decline and turning it into a third world country within five years. We are at a ratio of one hundred percent of spending to gross national product, GDP — unsustainable.

Simpson believes Norquist and the pledge will become irrelevant because our financial circumstance are beyond dire and tax increases, removal of loopholes in the tax code and removal of subsidies for the few will be essential to balancing our budget.

If the Republican members of Congress who have signed the pledge do not rescind it, continue to put themselves first and the American people second, they will have betrayed their oath of office. Some who have signed have rescinded the pledge and have put the financial health of United States of America in first position for a change.

What is your thought on the contribution the Boles-Simpson report will make to the benefit of the U.S.?
